New Exhibition on the Road
The exhibition Jacob A. Riis: How the Other Half Lives is on its way to its first stop—Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums in Fremont, Ohio, where it will be on view April 6 through May 25. It marks the start of the exhibition’s five-year tour going into 2023.
Jacob Riis (1849–1914) was a pioneering newspaper reporter and social reformer in New York City at the turn of the twentieth century. A Danish immigrant, he used his images to illustrate the plight of the urban poor. The exhibition features photographs by Riis and his contemporaries, as well as his handwritten journals and personal correspondence.
This is adapted from the exhibition Jacob A. Riis: Revealing New York’s Other Half, organized by the Museum of the City of New York. The exhibition was curated by Bonnie Yochelson and co-presented by the Library of Congress.
